Van Pelt, Brooks, Lovell To Depart In September
3 NEW TUTORS
As Gammon enters her fifty-fourth term in September, there will be several changes in her faculty personnel due to the departure of Professors J. R. Van Pelt, R. N. Brooks, and J. H. Lovell. While Gammon regrets to see these men go, it is a source of satisfaction to be able to replace them with equally capable men.
The Rev. Frank W. Clelland, A. M., Ph. D., D. D., successor to Dr. J. R. Van Pelt as Professor of New Testament and Christian Doctrine, has quite an impressive academic record. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Missouri Wesleyan; the Bachelor of Sacred Theology, the Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees from Boston University. In addition, Dr. Clelland has done special work at the University of Chicago, Harvard Divinity School, and the Episcopal Theological School in Cambridge, Mass.
Dr. Clelland's "Experience Record" has been equally extensive. From 1910-1919 he served as Professor of English Bible and Philosophy at Missouri Wesleyan, his alma mater, and was Registrar from 1915-1919. From 1919-1931 he was connected with the Boston University School of Religious Education in various capacities as follows: Assistant Professor English Bible 1919-1922; Associate Professor Biblical History, Literature and Religion 1922-1924; Professor Biblical History Literature and Religion, 1924-1930; Registrar 1922-1931; Executive Secretary and Assistant Dean, 1924-1928; Acting Dean 1928-1929. Since 1933, Dr. Clelland has served as a Professor of New Testament Language and Literature in the Bangor Theological Seminary, Bangor, Maine.
The Reverend Matthew W. Clair Jr., S. T. B., S. T. M., D. D., Successor to Dr. J. H. Lovell in the Chair of Practical Theology received his Bachelor of Arts degree at Howard University; the Bachelor of Sacred Theology at Boston University; and the Master of Sacred Theology at the Iliff School of Theology. He has served effectively pastorates in the Washington Conference, Daytona Beach, and Denver, Colorado; Chaplain in the United States Army; Professor of Religious Education in Bethune-Cookman College; Field Worker in the Department of Evangelism of the Board of Home Missions of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
For the past seven years he has been the successful pastor of the Simpson Methodist Episcopal Church, Indianapolis, Ind.
The successor to Dr. Robert N. Brooks of the Department of Christian History, is the Reverend Charles T. Talbert, B. D., M. A.
Although one of our recent graduates, Mr. Talbert has already shown promise of unusual achievement in his chosen field of Church History. His Master of Arts degree at Northwestern was won in this field. Beginning in 1932, he spent several years at the University of Chicago with Dr. Sweet of that institution who writes quite favorably of his possibilities in the field of Church History. Mr. Talbert has completed his residence requirements for the Doctorate in Philosophy and will doubtless receive the degree at an early date.
Equally important from the standpoint of his possible contribution as a Professor in Gammon is Mr. Talbert's brief but really brilliant career in the pastorate. Since June, 1934 he has been the pastor of the St. James Methodist Episcopal Church, Shreveport, Louisiana. Bishop Jones and others who know of his pastoral record are loud in their praises of his achievements along this line.
