Jubilant Wayne University football players began their training for the coming campaign last week at the Detroit Recreation Camp near Brighton, Mich.
Over 50 players, including 30 veterans reported to Coach Lou Zarza. Of the 30, 12 are lettermen.
Following much uncertainty over whether football would be dropped at Wayne, until a reprieve was granted several weeks ago, many of last year's star high school grid stars made preparation to enroll elsewhere.
Luckily Zarza will be able to call on practically the same backfield that closed the 1953 campaign, but in the line it's a different story.
Only Jack Kelly is missing at left halfback in the backfield and sophomore Jack Goggins of Flint showed capably in spring drills.
The Wayne forward wall is missing both starting ends George Stephenson and Jack Crittendon, as well as tackles Roger Parmentier and Paul Costea. Guards Steve Genyk and Larry Kuzniar are returning along with center Hal Beardsley.
