Antwerp. By the peace of Europe, and the free navigation of the Scheldt, this ancient city is likely to become again of commercial consequence. The widow of John Martin Smets, of that place, whose strength of capital enables her to give facility to commercial transactions, has in consequence offered her services to the merchants of the United States, in that line. Two hundred years ago, Antwerp was the greatest place for trade in Europe. Its commerce was diminished by the civil wars, and totally annihilated by the shutting of the navigation of the Scheldt by the treaty of Munster: and the Exchange once so thronged, is now the abode of solitude and silence.
