THE ADDRESS
Of His Excellency Josiah Bartlett, Esquire, on accepting the office of Chief Magistrate of this State.
Gentlemen of the Senate, and gentlemen of the House of Representatives,
OUR committee having very politely notified me, that I have the honour to be appointed President of this State for the current year; I now wait on the two Houses, to return my sincere thanks, for this additional mark of confidence.
As I have ever considered it to be my duty, even in the most trying scenes, not to decline any services required of me by my fellow-citizens, if it was in any degree, in my power to discharge the duties of them: so I shall not at this time decline this arduous, but very honorable appointment-and shall use my utmost endeavours to discharge the duties of the office, with zeal and fidelity; In doing which, I shall make great dependence on being supported by you, gentlemen of both branches of the legislature; and shall rely much on the advice and assistance of the council to be by you appointed.
When you consider that my time and attention, for years past, have been wholly absorbed in discharging the duties of a different department, I doubt not but your candour and politeness will excuse any little errors or omissions, that may happen in the course of my administration.
Gentlemen, I now attend, and am ready to take the oaths directed by the Constitution.
