A CHANGE OF TONE.

To conciliate the South, Mr. Clay now affects to speak with affectionate sympathy of the 'nullifiers,' whom he has so often and so contemptuously decried.— He forgets his recent taunts in the Senate, when he told Mr. Calhoun, with the most arrogant scorn, that he interfered to prevent 'old Jackson from hanging the nullifiers!' Gen. Hamilton thinks that the Union was saved by the recollection of the circumstance that he shook hands with Mr. Clay, after he had twice shot at his principal, Mr. Randolph, whom he had challenged for alluding to the unholy alliance of the puritan and the black-leg!' This is the most amusing explanation of the mysterious affair which we have yet met with. The truth is, Mr. Clay saw that the patriotic efforts of Gen. Jackson were about to effect a satisfactory settlement of the vexed question, and he made a virtue of necessity, by abandoning his spurious 'American system,' to which the good people of the United States were unwilling to sacrifice this glorious Union, and the happy harmony which had bound sister States together in bonds of love, until irritated and disturbed by the interference of selfish or mercenary politicians. Yet after this solemn pledge of harmony restored, he did not scruple to encourage his whig Congress, at the first opportunity, to violate that vaunted compromise act, which he had exhibited as the bow of promise and against all storms which might again threaten to disturb and break up this cherished Union—the best guaranty of our liberty, the surest pledge of public prosperity and private happiness.
