SPANISH SOLDIERS IN RETREAT—HEAVY LOSS IN THE FIELD.

HAVANA, Jan. 15, 1874.

Spanish accounts say Colonel Esponda, with 650 men, had an engagement with the insurgents near Melones. The fighting lasted six or seven hours, and at the close Col. Esponda retreated before the superior numbers of the enemy.

His loss was four officers and sixteen privates killed and fourteen officers and fifty privates wounded.

Owing to the severity and length of the combat the insurgent loss could not be ascertained.
