DR. CALDWELL'S CASE.

Vote Will Soon Be Taken In Presbyterian Assembly.

Associated Press.

Greenville, S. C., May 23. The general assembly of the Southern Presbyterian church heard today the continuation of the arguments in the case of Dr. William E. Caldwell, of Fort Worth, Texas, against whom charges of heresy have been made.

Dr. Josephus Johnson of Austin, Texas, addressed the assembly in behalf of the Synod of Texas. He was followed by Dr. William R. Leavell of Houston, representing the First Presbyterian church of Fort Worth of which Dr. Caldwell is or was pastor. These speakers concluded the arguments in the case and the vote by roll call will be taken later.

A brief statement of the case follows:

Dr. Caldwell complains of the action of the Synod of Texas on the following grounds:

He was called to the pastorate of the Fort Worth church, was examined admitted and installed as pastor by the Fort Worth Presbytery. Later a letter from an individual was received by the synod saying that Dr. Caldwell's beliefs were not orthodox.

The synod considered the complaint and referred it to the Fort Worth Presbytery with the recommendation that it sever the relations between Dr. Caldwell and the Fort Worth church.

Dr. Caldwell's complaint brought before the assembly now is that the synod is wrong. If the assembly by a majority vote shall sustain Dr. Caldwell, he will be pastor of the Fort Worth church and a member of the Fort Worth Presbytery. If this vote shall be contrary, both these relations will be severed.
