FIGHT WITH PHILADELPHIA FISHERMEN.

We learn that some fishermen from this city
have been poaching in the waters of the Delaware,
near Jones' Creek, contrary to the laws of
the State of Delaware.

On Thursday, the Sheriff
made a descent upon them and after a severe
fight, captured them and carried the conquered
party to Dover. The correspondent of the Ledger
at that place says:

A few days since, information was filed before
a Justice of our place, that the fishermen of four
fishing vessels from Philadelphia were fishing in
our waters in violation of the laws of our State.
Upon this affidavit, a writ was directed to the
sheriff to arrest them. In obedience to this writ,
the Sheriff summoned a posse of about thirty men,
who proceeded immediately to its execution. On
arriving at the beach, they found the boats a
ground, as the tide was low. They immediately
arrested the sixteen fishermen, and put them on
board the boats at flood tide, in order to bring
them into Little Creek, whence the men were to
be brought to Dover. On their way, however
one of the boats being guarded by men wholly
unacquainted with navigation, was rescued by the
four seamen who were placed in her as captives.
This boat was the "Linus," or "Lawrence," or
some such name, and owned by Captain Lewis, I
think. The four seamen on board of this boat
acted so willingly and cheerfully, as entirely to
throw their guard of seven men off their guard.
At a seasonable moment, they snatched the guns
of the guard, whom, after some hard but ineffectual
resistance, they mastered and set on shore a
bout eight miles from Dover. The other three
boats, with their crews of four men each, were se
cured, and after some difficulty brought to Dover.
Here they were yesterday tried, and clearly
proved to have been guilty of the offence charged
upon them. Sentence was this afternoon pro
nounced in substance, as follows: that their ves
sels boats, and fishing tackle should be forfeited,
and sold within five days; and that each of the
twelve men should be fined in the sum of two
hundred dollars—the legal penalty attached to the
offence. They were then remanded to prison,
where they are to remain until the payment of
their fines.

A correspondent of the United States Gazette
says:

Christian Faros, George Knock, John Tuttle,
Charles Pose, George Sheets, Charles Ufferman,
Jacob Fluke, George Yorke, Baker Shectzline,
Peter Huyes, Elias Higby and George Wagner,
have been tried before Justice Harper, found guil
ty, fined $200 each, and forfeited their boats,
tackle, &c., which is directed by the Justice to be
sold on the second of March next. The above
named persons are all in prison at this place.—
They all, I believe, belong to Philadelphia.

Pennsylvanian.
