OPEN TODAY AND
DEER WEDNESDAY
"If you can't see his horns, she hasn't got any," is the slogan of safety recommended by the New Mexico Game Protective association to all deer hunters in a statement issued by the office yesterday, preparatory to opening of the season Wednesday. Duck season opens today and many hunters left for feeding places yesterday.
Reports received from the mountains indicate that turkeys are plentiful this year but that deer are barely holding their own. It is the consensus of opinion among sportsmen that a permanent closed season will be necessary beginning next year, unless the proposed bill for a state game commission is passed by the next legislature. This bill will empower the game department to establish game refuges and local closed seasons in those localities where the deer need a period of recuperation.
Many does are illegally killed yearly, much domestic stock is killed and crippled and most shooting accidents are caused by too much waste in shooting at everything that moves, the association statement says.
