INDIANS IN TEXAS.—The Indians in Texas it seems are becoming daily more hostile, and the greatest vigilance was becoming necessary to protect the frontier settlements from their attacks. We extract from the San Agustin Union the following extract from a letter, dated
SHELBYVILLE. May 15. 1848
"No move had been made by the Indians of a hostile character—a look out is necessarily kept up by the vigilant and watchful Ranger. Our frontier line is quite safe, protected according to the following programme:
Capt. Fitzhugh's company on the East fork of Trinity with a detachment 30 miles above near Red river.
Capt. Johnson's company, West fork of Trinity, detachment 30 miles below on Chambers Creek.
Capt. Ross, at Waco village, detachment on the Leon, 30 miles distant.
Capt. McCullough's. Hamilton's valley, 60 miles North of Austin.
Capt. Conner's, on the Sandy, 18 miles above Fredericksburg.
Capt. Gillett, on Aroya Saco, 60 miles South-west of San Antonio
Capt. Veatch, on the Rio Grande, at the Presidio crossing.
Capt. Crump, on the Medina, 20 miles south of San Antonio.
Capt. Lamar, at Laredo. on the Rio Grande
Capt. Sutton, near San Patricio, on the Nueces, detachment at Corpus Christi.
Col. Bell. in command of the line. is an excellent and efficient officer.
