Full Text

Extract of a Letter from New York, June 28.

"You will, ere this, have learnt the destruction of the schooner Eagle, fitted at this port, for the ostensible purpose of destroying some of the squadron off New London; but the real object was to do something to irritate the commanding officer on that station, to induce him to retaliate, on New London, or some other part of Connecticut—for, unnatural as you may think it, there are men in this city (of the Salamander kind that must die when the war ceases) that would rejoice to see every town in New England in flames; but blessed be God, the most thinking and judicious part look to the Yankees for Political Salvation."

The schooner Eagle was fitted in New York ostensibly to destroy part of the British squadron off New London, but the real intent was to irritate the commanding officer and provoke retaliation on New London or other Connecticut towns.
