On the 4th of March inst. about three o'clock, in the afternoon, a fire broke out on the roof of the house of Moses Wright, Esq. in Templeton. The alarm being given, the inhabitants immediately repaired to the building with an engine, and every exertion was used to extinguish the destructive element. While the engine was applied to the roof, the house was chiefly cleared of the furniture. Many carried snow in and threw on the floors, while others entered the chambers, surrounded by the flames, and beat off and threw from the house the timbers as they fell. The engine was employed until all the water from four wells was exhausted, after which, numbers were added to those who were throwing on snow. Such was the perseverance of the citizens, that the fire was extinguished just before dusk. The building was an upright house, 40 by 30 feet, with a back kitchen and wood-house adjoining. The whole of the roof was burned down, and of the upper story nothing was left but the posts of the house, some of which were consumed, the outside of the others was burnt to a coal. By this sudden and unexpected misfortune, the family are bereft of a comfortable dwelling.
In the evening after the fire, a number of citizens met together, to concert measures to restore the loss. So spirited were the exertions of the citizens of Templeton and the vicinity, that the house was framed, raised, boarded and shingled, between Tuesday noon and Monday night. Such measures have been adopted that there is reasonable hope that the house will be soon finished so as to be a comfortable dwelling.
