NEARING DEATH'S DOOR
The Czar of Russia Approaching Final Dissolution.

PATRIOTIC PRINCESS ALIX.
She Hastens to the Bedside of Her Father-in-Law to Be to Assuage His Dying Sorrows.

Livadia, Oct. 23.—Princess Alix of Hesse-Darmstadt, betrothed wife of the czarewitch, arrived here at 5:30 yesterday, accompanied by the Grand Duchess Elizabeth, the wife of the Grand Duke Sergius of Russia. The journey of the Princess Alix through the Crimea was in the nature of a state progress. At Alupka the bride-elect was welcomed by the czarewitch and the Grand Duke Sergius. As the princess and party drove through Yalta the czarewitch and his intended wife were seated side by side. They were heartily cheered by the crowds. The imperial castle was reached at dusk, and the Princess Alix was immediately conducted into the presence of the czar and czarina. The czar greeted the princess with every mark of affection. The bride-elect, accompanied by the czarina and other members of the royal family, proceeded to the chapel, where a solemn religious ceremony was conducted. Princess Alix kneeling beside the empress and joining in long and fervent supplications for the recovery of the czar. After the religious ceremony the princess and imperial party returned to the room occupied by the czar. The Grand Duke and Grand Duchess Vladimir, the former a brother of the emperor, arrived here Sunday, and the king of Greece is on his way from Vienna. Prof. Merschejewski, specialist on nervous diseases, supposed to have been summoned to attend the czarina, has returned to St. Petersburg, from which it is presumed there is no truth in the sensational stories circulated regarding the health of her majesty.

Welcomed the Princess.

Moscow, Oct. 23. Upon arriving on Russian territory the Princess Alix received a telegram of welcome to Russia from the municipality of Moscow. The princess Alix replied in the following terms: "I am deeply touched that the city of Moscow has thought of me at the moment when I set foot upon the soil of my new home so long dear to me. We, my sister and myself, heartily thank the old and first capital of Russia. We did not doubt the favors of its prayers for the health of our beloved emperor. May God help us. Alix."

A Washington Canard.

Washington, Oct. 23.—Prince Cantacuzene, Russian minister, authorizes the Associated Press to deny as a canard the sensational publication in a Washington morning paper today to the effect that a Russian council of state had been convened for the first time since the assassination of Alexander III in 1881. The council has been in continuous session for years.

Physicians Less Pessimistic.

Paris, Oct. 23.—A dispatch to the Figaro from Livadia says the disease from which the czar is suffering recently reached a terrible crisis, which lasted thirteen hours. At present his majesty is slightly better. The imperial physicians, though treating the situation as serious, are less pessimistic.

A Bulletin Issued.

St. Petersburg, Oct. 23.—The following bulletin was issued this morning:

"The czar slept better last night. His majesty has little appetite and there is no improvement in the imperial patient's strength or in the action of the heart. The oedema has increased."

Will Be Wed Today.

St. Petersburg, Oct. 23.—It is announced the marriage of the czarewitch to the Princess Alix will take place at Livadia tomorrow unless the condition of the czar is so serious as to prevent it.
