The election in New York last week resulted in the triumph of the Democratic State ticket by about 10,000 majority. Fremont's majority over Buchanan last fall was 80,129.
This shows a most deplorable change since that time, but if we take into consideration the number of votes cast, there is reason to hope New York may yet rank among the Republican States when a proper interest is aroused. The Tribune says the Democratic vote is about the same as that for Buchanan last year, while nearly 100,000 Republicans abstained from voting and the American vote is less than one-half that polled by the same party last year. It adds:
"We know that the principles of the Republicans are still cherished by a large majority of our fellow-citizens, and we trust they will make this manifest on an early occasion. In that faith, we work and wait."
The Chicago Tribune assigns the defeat of the Republican ticket in New York to the following causes:
"1st. To the criminal apathy of Republican strongholds.
2d. To the wide-spread dissatisfaction of the party in consequence of the legislation at Albany last winter, by which the taxes of 1857 were at once doubled. The tax was levied to complete the canals, and it could not have been avoided by any party in power. It was proper in itself; but politically the result is pernicious. The Democrats assisted in the levy but repudiated their action at the polls.
3d. To the close union between the Border Ruffian and American parties, by which the rank and file all voted the Pro-Slavery ticket.
4th. To the universal prevalence of the hard times, which the Pro-Slavery orators turned into a fault of the Republican policy."
