ADVERTISE TRAVEL ATTRACTIONS.
There are so many Federal bureaus that the suggestion that we have another one may cause some to shudder. But the World Work for September advocates another bureau that ought to have an appeal to the business sense of the country.
It proposes that we have a Federal Travel Bureau to be attached to the Department of Commerce the purpose of which would be to let the world-including particularly our own people-know what we have in the United States that would be interesting to those who travel.
People will travel, especially during the agreeable months. They visit the mountains and seas and scenes of historical and other interest. They seek places where climate is agreeable and where picturesque scenery abounds. They hunt out the wonder spots of the world.
Why should we not let the travelers of the world know what we have to show? We go abroad by the thousands and take cash by the hundreds of millions with us to spend abroad. Why not get some of this business for ourselves? We have regions that possess attractions for travelers at all seasons of the year. We have a lot to show.
Let it all be made known.
Of course travelers come to the United States now. It is said that Canadians spend $85,000,000 a year in this country. Why not try to increase this traffic? Canadians could afford it for they collect from tourists much more-$251,000,000 in 1929. And it might be suggested to Europeans who travel that if they find the United States dry or monotonous the roads leading to Canada are always open and easy to find.
France has a travel bureau and in return she collected last year $333,000,000 from foreign tourists. She has travel commissioners who make it easy for the inexperienced to cross international borders. The World's Work proposal is for us to do that. It suggests that we place Government agents in Canada first and then cover the world as fast as the work may be extended.
