From the London Alfred, of September 21.

Despatches were received on Saturday from Mr. Thornton. This communication is generally believed to contain the result of the recent interview at Abo, between the Emperor Alexander & the Crown Prince of Sweden. Of the propositions, and final stipulations, of the secret conference between these important personages, and which is said to have lasted four hours, the people of Gottenburg are perhaps not better informed than those of this Metropolis: it is however, asserted in the Gazettes received from thence, that the co-operation of Sweden has been purchased by the promised restoration of Finland within six months.

Forty thousand Russian troops, and twenty thousand Swedes, are now to be transported across the Baltic without further loss of time—but from the various points of descent, which rumour designates as the destination of this force, it cannot be doubted, that on this subject nothing is yet known beyond conjecture. Zealand, or Pomerania, are, by many, believed to be the real object of this armament. At the commencement of the campaign, ere Wilna was abandoned, a descent at either of those points, might have constrained Bonaparte to divert some part of the vast force with which he was advancing, but he is now far beyond the operation of any movement so remote from the great scene of action, in the heart of Russia. If, at the opening of the campaign, an attack had been made on Dantzick, by a force adequate to the reduction, or even close blockade of that important depot, the line on which Bonaparte's supplies have moved with such unceasing regularity, might have been successfully interrupted. From Dantzick, the navigation of the Vistula is practicable for light vessels of small draught of water, even almost to Warsaw—and the co-operation of a numerous force of vessels suitable for this species of navigation, might, at least, have retarded the advance of Bonaparte

What may have been the obstacles during the last six months to the negotiation which is only now concluded with Sweden, is a mystery which may defy conjecture; but that Bonaparte should have been suffered to penetrate to the very province of Moscow, ere the tardy co-operation of Sweden is called forth, furnishes most lamentable proof of defective policy, in some quarter.—That the resources of France have, during more than an entire year, been put in requisition from every quarter of the French Empire and its dependencies, for the express object to which it is now directed, can no more be doubted, than that of the different courts of Europe must have been aware of the true object of Bonaparte's mighty preparations. Yet with the certainty of that fact, what correspondent preparations of defence do we find on the side of Russia?—Plunged, by the intrigue of French agents, into war successively with Turkey, and Sweden, Russia blindly perseveres in combating the Turks, until the French actually enter her Polish territory—and when Bonaparte is almost in sight of Moscow, then, and not till then, Alexander purchases the assistance of Sweden by the restitution of Finland, to the conquest of which he was so recently stimulated by Bonaparte! Alexander is cajoled at Erfurth, to assist in the ruin of his neighbor, the Emperor of Austria—who in his turn displays a conscientious, and most political reciprocity, in contributing to the humiliation of Alexander!

Thus, Bonaparte plays off at pleasure, the three great military powers of the continent of Europe against each other with as much facility, as if they were mere automatical puppets. Against a concentrated force, directed by energetic policy and consummate talent, combined in the person of a single individual, the uncertain policy of confederacies, can never be successful—until one common principle of interest, and resistance, shall actuate the whole.

If Bernadotte be truly sincere, of which the stipulation regarding Finland might induce some suspicion, a descent in Swedish Pomerania, can be an object of the meditated expedition. The presence of 60,000 fresh troops in the vicinity of Riga, might give decided preponderance to the scale, which has so long vibrated in doubtful success on the Dwina—and we confidently trust and hope, that the combined army under Bernadotte will be brought into immediate contact, with the French corps, forming the left of Bonaparte's immensely
