SIR,
I AM directed by Captain Windsor to desire you will inform their Lordships, that being ordered by Admiral Keppel to cruise in search of the French fleet, on the 10th of September we perceived in the N. E. (it being thick squally weather, and we at the same time in chase of a ship and a sloop) a French frigate bearing down upon us; on which we shortened sail, and engaged her for three hours and an half, having lost all our mats, most of our guns disabled, and the enemy being perfectly in a condition to continue the action, we were obliged to strike to the Junon, who has brought us into Brest.
The reason of my writing is, that Captain Windsor has a musket ball in the right arm; one of the bones of which it has splintered. It was not till last night the ball could be extracted. At present there is no fear of his losing his arm. Captain Windsor is slightly wounded in four other places. The Junon is commanded by the Viscount de Beaumont. She fought on each side fourteen 12 pounders, six 6 pounders, and had 230 men.
Captain Windsor particularly desires me to mention that every attention and civility has been paid to himself and his officers; particularly by Monsieur de Beaumont, and Monsieur la Porte, the Intendant, at whose house he is at present lodged. The greatest care has likewise been taken of the sick and wounded. We had 32 wounded, and 14 killed.
I am, Sir,
Your very humble servant,
A. BERTIE.
