Jas. McCormick, of North Salem, swore out a warrant for the arrest of Prof. Bellwood and Miss Carnahan, the former principal and the latter a teacher in North Salem school.

The charge is whipping, beating, hitting, and kicking in a cruel manner his son, Clinton McCormick, age ten years.

The teachers were arrested this morning and trial before Justice Batchelor is set for 1 p. m.

THE BOY'S STORY is in effect that he was kept after school hours Wednesday evening and whipped by Miss Carnahan, while Prof. Sellwood held him. The boy protested at the punishment after close of school hours, and called the lady teacher some very harsh names, as well as Sellwood, at which the latter took the rod and also beat the boy.

HIS INJURIES. It seems the boy was whipped through his clothes and the doctors who have examined him say it is a severe case of corporal punishment. His back and legs show black and blue welts. Mr. McCormick feels very much outraged, and will prosecute the case with much vigor. The boy was taken before Drs. Philbrook, Smith, Byrd and others.

PLEAD NOT GUILTY. The teachers appeared before Justice Batchelor and entered a plea of not guilty. They say the boy is almost incorrigible and deserved a severe punishment.

Outside opinion seems to be that the boy probably deserved punishment of some kind, as most boys do, but that a lighter switching would have answered every purpose.

The tendency of public sentiment is against corporal punishment in general, and the result of the trial is awaited with great interest.

THE JURY. At 1 p. m. following jury was selected: J. I. Thompson, D. C. Howard, Joseph Howard, J. H. Ross, R. R. Ryan, I. Steiner, and adjourned to get the jury. Bonham and Holmes are attorneys for defence. Prosecuting Attorney Condit and Capt. M. W. Hunt appear for the state.
