The population, according to the last enumeration, in 1817, amounts to 713,966 souls; 305,247 males, 331,925 females; 56,794 not specified. The number of houses is only 26,801, while the number of separate hearths (or families) is 224,921. The total number of births in 1818, was 26,406--of which 22,029 in private houses; 4,377 in the public hospitals. Of boys there were born 13,451; of girls, 12,955: of which number of children, 8,353 were illegitimate.
The total number of deaths was 25,706--males 12,692; females 13,014. Excess of births over deaths, 700. The number of marriages was 7,455. In 1817 the number of births was 23,739; of deaths, 21,124; number of marriages, 6,582.

The national guard on horseback forms 2 squadrons consisting of 256 privates, 40 officers, 40 subalterns, and 7 trumpeters.
The City of Paris keeps on constant duty a corps of gens d'armes, mounted and dismounted, divided into 4 companies, and forming a total of 1,021 men, and 471 horses; and also a battalion of firemen, whose effective force is 575 men.
