Patriotism that does honor to the country, deserves to be recorded--We now add another instance to those already noticed--On the 5th June, the 60th regiment, commanded by Col. Kountz, were assembled--the object a draft of 145--the regiment consisted of 600 men, 445 volunteered--and the officers were obliged to determine by ballot who should of the number stay at home, as all insisted on marching first in defence of their country's invaded rights --A circumstance that discovers Roman greatness, ought not to be overlooked--a young man who had drawn a blank, stepped up and offered his more successful neighbour ten dollars for his tour; but it was refused The troop of cavalry, sixty strong, determined to tender their services to the president as part of the 50,000 volunteers. The crisis is bringing to view the energy and firmness of the people in defence of their rights--rights which nature and nature's God gave them, and which they will preserve. The people of America put confidence in their valor and good fortune; and when the sword is necessary for their defence, they will take it up. Capable of bringing powerful and brave armies into the field, we have nothing to fear from War. We know its difficulties and dangers, but honor, sacred honor, beckons, and we must encounter & surmount them. The hour of retribution has come at last--the contest which our enemies have so long by their oppression and their injustice invited, we will not avoid-- The ghosts of our fathers shall not reproach us--the pride of valor and the love of country inherited from ancestors, whom we take for our models, invoke us to the glorious struggle--and what American is deaf to such a summons?
