Gen. Taylor Powerfully Defended.

Washington June 4th.

We have had a stirring session to-day in the Senate. Mr. Webster, in his reply this morning to Bradbury's resolution, calling upon the President for the reasons for removals from office. took occasion to compliment the President as a faithful, honest, candid, and capable Chief Magistrate, and said he should have his cordial support. Bradbury replied, reiterating charges when Mr. Bell, of Tennessee, took him up, and, in one of the most powerful, withering speeches I ever heard, characterized this petty and malevolent war upon the Administration in language about which there could be no mistake. Douglass, of Illinois, a young and exceedingly zealous democrat, then opened fire with a long second-hand tirade, taken almost verbatim et literatim from the scurrilous columns of the Union. The speech of Mr. Dawson was such a forensic display as is seldom witnessed on that floor, or anywhere else. It was a powerful and scathing exposition of the motives which induced this petty and scurrilous warfare. He rebuked Douglass for his exhibition of partisanship, in language which he ought not to forget. He said that four fifths of the offices of the country were in the hands of the Democrats, most of whom were violent partisans, when Gen. Taylor came into power. He had made the removals of the partisans with a view to placing parties on a footing of equality, but there still remains, at the present time, a majority of the offices in the hands of Democrats.
