KAAHUMANU
CHURCH
OF WAILUKU.
RECEIVES ATTENTION
(Special to the Bulletin)
Wailuku, Maui, Sept 27.-Rev. E. S. Timoteo, D. K. White and S. L. Desha, a committee of three appointed by the church convention held at Lahaina the early part of this week were at Wailuku yesterday to investigate the financial standing of the Kaahumanu church. For this old historic church as far as finances are concerned is in a very bad plight, either through the apathy of the members neglect of the pastor or bad financing on the part of the Board of Trustees.
Somebody is responsible for this backward state of affairs, but the committee is not ready to lay the blame on any particular individual or body of men. Rev. J. Nua, the pastor, has a claim on the church for something between five and eight hundred dollars for back salary. Mr. Nua will be asked to vacate in order to give the church an opportunity to save money so as to pay him the required sum. An acting pastor will be appointed to bring the church out of this financial chaos, and perhaps bring it back to its high standard of former years when many of the influential Hawaiians were counted among its principal supporters.
The church owns a beautiful stone edifice and fine laid out grounds free from debt. The congregation is a live one and it only needs a live man with lots of push and energy to extricate the church from its present pilikia. Rev. S. L. Desha of Hilo is mentioned for the place, but the great Hawaiian pulpit orator will not exchange Haili for Kaahumanu. Rev. Mr. White of Lahaina, a man of great organizing ability, a fluent speaker, is also spoken for the place, but he does not want to relinquish his prosperous congregation at Wainee for chimerical Kaahumanu.
