A bureau of fire prevention has just been organized in New York city under the new state law enacted as a result of the great Asch building fire and similar disasters. Nearly 600 inspectors will be employed by the bureau, whose officers and men are drawn from the fire department. The force will inspect buildings and will work in co-operation with the bureau of fire extinguishment. Large powers are given to the new bureau; it will have control of fire-escapes and fire-exits, cellars, dumbwaiter shafts, auxiliary fire appliances and everything designed to protect human life from fire, says the Chicago Record-Herald. A landlord who refuses to comply with the order of the bureau will be required to close his building until the changes thought necessary by the bureau have been made. The example of New York in this respect ought to be followed in many states. Illinois has made a start through the authorization by the legislature of a commission to codify the building laws and report recommendations for fire protection after examination of the laws of other states. This commission is not required to report before January 1, 1913; meantime local fire-prevention ordinances should be rigidly enforced.
