The President of the United States, on his return to the seat of Government appears to have been treated with various manifestations of respectful attention, at New York, Philadelphia and Baltimore. A committee of gentlemen, appointed by a numerous meeting at Baltimore, addressed a letter of invitation to Mr. Adams, whilst he was yet at New York, requesting him in the most flattering terms to consent to remain in the city of Baltimore a few days before his departure for Washington. The President in his reply, said he proposed to continue his journey on the 13th, and to pass the day in Baltimore on Monday.
While in Philadelphia, he visited the Navy Yard, accompanied by the Secretary of the Navy. He was received by Com. Bainbridge with military honors, and visited the new line of battle ship, the Pennsylvania, which is stated to be one of the finest models in the world. After leaving the navy yard he visited the Naval Asylum building on the Schuylkill.
The President arrived at Baltimore on the morning of the 14th, and took lodgings at the City Hotel. Having notice of the death of Col. Howard, he expressed his desire to attend his funeral, out of respect to his memory. He remained on Tuesday, to give an opportunity for all citizens to visit him. At dinner on that day he gave a short address, one of those suitable and pertinent sentiments, which are characteristic of his mind. It is this:
The living and the dead—Charles Carroll of Carrollton, and John Eager Howard.
While in Baltimore, he dined with the Cincinnati of Maryland, and the officers and Soldiers wounded in the Battle of North Point. The following toast was given on behalf of the Committee:
The United States of America—May other countries learn from them, that the easy access of the people to their rulers, is the means of confidence on the one side, and of right government on the other.
On retiring, the President, after a few remarks, returning thanks for the reception which had been given to him by his fellow-citizens of Baltimore, gave—
Baltimore; The Monumental City—May the days of her safety be as prosperous and happy, as the days of her dangers have been trying and triumphant.
The President left Baltimore for Washington on the 17th inst.
