-The Sioux having recently murdered fourteen Chippewas, the latter have retorted by killing two Sioux and taking three others prisoners. On hearing of this the party of Sioux immediately started in pursuit of the murderers: on the same day, the 15th, they returned through St. Paul with the corpse of one man, whom they had in a canoe, nailed up in a box, covered with a red pall. Just at dark they left the lower landing in sadness, with their canoes, for their village, four miles down the river.
