ORIGINAL POETRY
LITERARY FABLES.

FABLE XI.
The two Rabbits.

O'er briers and bogs,
Pursued by the dogs,
A rabbit was posting away,
When out from his hole
Another one stole,
And ask'd "why this hurry, friend, pray?"

Exhausted of breath,
The first one cried "sdeath:
Why what in the world should it be,
But yonder fierce hounds,
That skip o'er the grounds,
Are bent upon kidnapping me?"

"Yes," t'other replies,
"I see with these eyes
What seems to be hounds in thy fright;
But hounds they are not--"
"Indeed! then say what?"
"Why, dogs:--I am sure I am right."

"What, dogs?" "Yes indeed;
I know well the breed;"
"And hounds too," replied t'other, "I know,"
"No, no they're not hounds,
'Tis terror confounds,
Else surely thou couldst not say so."

In such dialogues
They talk'd, till the dogs
Came up the dispute to decide:
Voracious and grim,
They tore limb from limb,
When, lack a day! both of them died!

Let those who in rhyme
Or in prose spend their time
In trifling disputes of this kind,
Regardless of such
As are more worthy, much,
Bear these rabbits' fate in their mind.

"A great man will not trample upon
a worm, nor speak to an emperor."
