THE EPISCOPALIANS.
As stated in the Gazette of that day the House of Bishops at the triennial convention of the Protestant Episcopal Church in session in Cincinnati yesterday selected five new bishops and one missionary bishop, but announced that the names of those selected would not be made public until the report is sent to the House of Deputies today for ratification.
A new missionary bishop to take the place of Bishop Graves, of Kearney, Neb., was also chosen, but his name was likewise withheld until today. The addition of these bishops will increase the membership of the House of Bishops to 110.
The last joint session of the House of Bishops and the House of Deputies took place in the afternoon, where church work in Mexico, Porto Rico, Brazil and Africa was discussed.
"Property and Human Life in Mexico" was the subject taken by Bishop H. D. Aves, of Mexico. He was followed by Bishop Kinsolving, of Brazil, who described the condition of the church in that country as very poor owing to lack of funds.
Bishop Ferguson, negro bishop of Cape Palmas, Africa, related his 25 years' experience in the Dark Continent.
Bishop J. H. Van Buren, of Porto Rico, described the conditions of the church in the island, asserting that they were discouraging in the extreme, but that even at that they had improved wonderfully in the last 10 years.
A world conference to discuss differences and agreements in the various beliefs of all christian churches is the object of a commission provided in a resolution passed by the House of Deputies. The commission is to consist of seven bishops and seven deputies, and will have power to call the conference and invite other Christian bodies to take part.
Resolutions were also adopted placing Episcopal chaplains of the army and navy under the jurisdiction of the bishop of Washington.
After a long debate the deputies rejected the amended Collect for Good Friday, passed by the bishops last week. The amendment would substitute the words "those outside the true faith" for "Jews, Turks, infidels and heretics." The matter will come up before the New York convention in 1913 on the report of a committee appointed to revise the Collect.
