From the Ripley Advertiser.

THE MEMPHIS AND CHARLESTON
RAILROAD.

The next legislature will be called upon to charter this road, and the question before that body, will be, shall a charter be granted the road located upon its present survey, or shall the Directory be required to make a re-survey, so as to locate the road where it will be most useful to the citizens of the State of Mississippi. That the present location is not that point, is obvious to all. The directory made the present location with no other view, than to promote the interest of the people of Tennessee and Alabama, and in utter disregard of the interest of the people of this State. It now remains to be seen, whether the Legislature of this State will permit the main trunk of this road to run, so as to throw all the large trading points upon it, out of this State; thus depriving the treasury of the State of Mississippi, of a very heavy revenue, derived from the sale of merchandise, and causing many of its citizens to emigrate to a border State for employment, growing out of the location of this road.

We venture the prediction, that no directory of a road ever asked so much of a Legislature, as this directory are about to demand from the State of Mississippi. The Legislature at its sitting in 1850, permitted the directory of this road to locate in the State of Mississippi, provided they run the road through the Town of Holly Springs. This was the only right of way they had through the State; and it would seem, that a proper respect for the sovereignty of the State would have dictated, that no road should have been surveyed that did not pass through that point. A very imperfect survey was made to Holly Spring, with no view however, to locate the road through that place, when this directory very coldly locate the road so as to suit their own private interests, and are now deliberately asking of this State to forego all the advantages that her citizens may derive from the main trunk of a road passing through the centre of three of the largest and most populous counties in the State, in order that certain individuals interested at other points may profit thereby. The Legislature of this State, will have too much self-respect to gratify these gentlemen and will say to them, if you can't go in our State where we have permitted you to go, you may leave our territory altogether.

Event Details

Editorial argues that the Memphis and Charleston Railroad's current survey disregards Mississippi's interests by favoring Tennessee and Alabama, violating the 1850 legislative condition to pass through Holly Springs. Urges legislature to require re-survey for state benefit or deny charter entirely.
