We regret to learn from the Virginian that the rain of Saturday week fell so heavily at Winchester as to inundate the lower parts of that town. At four o'clock, P. M. Loudoun and Water streets were covered with water to the depth of several feet, and all the lower part of the town shared the same fate. Much damage was sustained by the filling of cellars, and the flooding of the grounds covered several feet by water. The entire amount of loss sustained by the town and neighbourhood will not be short of twenty or thirty thousand dollars. We learn that Messrs. J. & A. Miller, M. I. Read, Hubb & Machir, S. Appold, and Col. Beatie were among the largest sufferers, the dwelling of the latter being entirely flooded to the depth of several feet, and the family compelled to quit the premises. In the country the heaviest losses were sustained by washing away of dams, fencing, hay, &c. including nearly all the mill dams on the Opequon. That of R. W. Barton, Esq. together with a large lot of hogs, and about 50 tons of hay, was carried off, making his loss alone several thousand dollars.
We add with regret that the daughter of Mr. John W. Melboro, a worthy and respectable citizen of the country was instantly killed by the lightning, and others of the family severely stunned from the shock.
