For the Wisconsin Herald
I Worship Beauty.
BY ST. MAR.

I worship beauty, not the bloom,
Upon the cheek of youth,
For oft the light which that illumes,
Is not the light of truth.

I worship beauty, not the light
Which beams in passion's eye;
For soon the flash so piercing bright,
Will burn away and die.

I worship beauty—not the form
Which moves with winning grace;
For there the first out-breaking storm
Each lineament might deface.

I worship beauty—'tis the soul
That on untiring wing—
Can roam with me from pole to pole,
And Nature's music sing.

I worship beauty—'tis the mind
That looks aloft from earth;
Whose secret thoughts are all refined
In truth's resplendent birth!

I worship beauty—'tis the heart
That feels another's woes:
From whose mild eye the tear will start,
That heals where'er it flows.

I worship beauty—'tis all truth
Glowing with light around;
But most I worship, when, in youth
The living plant is found.
