Full Text

Hail, Hail.

"There comes an item," growled our foreman, as patter-patter came down the stones upon our front portico. Of course. Time, twenty minutes past 2; gloomy but not threatening sky; all of a sudden hail came down with Assyrian copiousness. It's a mistake, however, to suppose that this is the seventeenth of May. Our foreman has so typed it; but he has no barometrical appreciation of the effect the weather has in spoiling dates, as commonly "put up" by Almanac & Co. We remarked that the hail was an imposition on the assumed month. Foreman growled again: "There ain't an imposing stone in the whole shower." There's going to be a muss in this office, about 3 o'clock P. M., on some sad day. There will be genuine orphans to care for, from this establishment; and no feminine foolishness. It has stopped hailing.

Short, smart rattle. It's on record—notwithstanding the lock-up growler.
