Full Text

Haen Pacha, who by his conduct and valour has just defeated and put to flight the rebel Beys of Egypt, and forced that country again to submit to the Grand Signior, is a fugitive from Algiers. He was Captain of the ship which engaged Admiral Spiridof, in the memorable defeat of the Turkish fleet, in the bay of Tchesme, when both the Russian Admiral and Haen's vessel were blown up, but both Commanders escaped with life. He afterwards drove the Russians from the isle of Lemnos with a handful of volunteers, and obliged them to take shelter on board their ship; an enterprize which the celebrated Baron Tott declared it impossible should be successful.—The Pacha is now 70 years of age, yet retains all the vigour and fire of youth.

Event Details

Haen Pacha, a fugitive from Algiers, recently defeated the rebel Beys of Egypt through his conduct and valour, restoring submission to the Grand Signior. He captained a ship that engaged Admiral Spiridof in the Turkish fleet's defeat at Tchesme bay, where both vessels exploded but commanders survived. Later, with volunteers, he drove Russians from Lemnos island, forcing them aboard their ships, despite Baron Tott deeming it impossible. At 70, he retains youthful vigour.
