Tennyson's Latest.
Tennyson's new volume contains some things equal to his best. It ranges from a dramatic idyll in Irish dialect to the simplest lyric verses. It is dedicated "To my good friend, Robert Browning, whose genius and geniality will best appreciate what may be best, and make most allowances for what may be worst." The first poem is inscribed to Edward Fitzgerald, the translator of Omar Khayyam. Among the notable poems is a long philosophical one in blank verse, with exquisite lyrics interspersed, from which we take the following:
But vain the tears for darkened years, as laughter over wine,
And vain the laughter as the tears, O brother mine or thine.
For all that laugh and all that weep and all that breathe are one
Slight ripple on the boundless deep that moves and all is gone.
The following quatrains are addressed to "Freedom":
Oh, follower of the vision still in motion to the distant gleams,
Howe'er blind force and brainless will may jar thy golden dreams:
Of knowledge fusing class with class, of civic hate no more to be:
Of love to leaven all the mass till every soul be free;
Who yet like nature wouldst not mar by changes all too fierce and fast
This order of her human star, this heritage of the past.
