WATERTOWN. June 24.

A letter from Machias was this day laid before the Provincial Congress, containing advices, that in consequence of an application to that place from Ichabod & Stephen Jones of Boston and Casco Bay, for lumber to supply the navy and army, the last mentioned person was arrested by the inhabitants, and put under guard, while the other had made his escape in the woods: That the captain of a tender sent to protect two sloops which the traitors aforesaid intended to have loaded, put springs to his cables, and threatened to burn the town unless the prisoners were released: That an engagement between the people on shore and the crew on board the tender took place, and the latter were obliged to put to sea. The inhabitants immediately manned the sloops, and arming themselves with fire arms, swords, axes and spears, came up with the tender, and engaged her the 2d time: An obstinate resistance was made, but that the tender was obliged to yield: That the captain of the tender was mortally wounded, and died the next morning; five of the crew were wounded, and one marine killed; two of our men were killed, & 5 wounded.
Mr. Robert Avery, of Norwich in Connecticut, who was a prisoner on board the tender, was unhappily killed.
