A discovery was made at Ravenna, Italy, a short time ago, of a document proving that Dante had a daughter called Beatrice, who lived and died in the convent of St. Stephen of the Olives, in that town. The document is a receipt found in the archives of Ravenna, and runs in substance as follows:
—On Sept. 20, 1371, Messer Donato, doctor of rhetoric and grammar, paid three ducats to the convent of St. Stephen of the Olives in its quality of prior of Beatrice, daughter of Dante Alighieri, a nun, who died there. On the death of Dante, Beatrice, being left to tarry as she was the daughter of an exile, entered the convent, says the correspondent of the Pall Mall Gazette, there to end her days. The events which took place in Ravenna deprived her of her brothers, Co. Novello da Polenta, the own patron of her father, so growing fame of her father, never reached her ears.
