The letter states that the 1st regiment of Ohio Volunteers were then on board the steamboats Alabama and Galveston, just about to land. Colonels Taylor and Gates, of the Army, with paymaster Kirby, were with them.
The 3d Regiment, with the 1st Regiment of Indiana Volunteers, were encamped at the battle ground, N. Orleans.
He says: 'We are informed that General Taylor has, at last, received his orders to proceed to the city of Mexico, and will make a move soon. He has now 15,000 troops in and about Matamoras.'
Colonel McKee's regiment (Kentucky) started the day before, but had not arrived at the Brazos.
Some 15 of the 1st Regiment of Ohioans were left sick at New Orleans. Among them were Captain Giddings of the Dayton Rifles, and Captain Bradley of the Sandusky company.
The next neighbor of the steamer, at the Brazos, was a British Corvette of 24 guns, just from Tampico. The Captain boarded the Alabama, and said the Mexicans would not give in easily, but would give a tight brush at Monterey. So said Gen. Mejia. There is a chance then, for another battle.
The battle grounds of the 5th and 9th were covered with water, so as to make little lakes.—Cincinnati Chronicle.
