On Landing at McGregor we made our way to the Times office, where we found Col. Richardson, the same good-hearted, social fellow as in days of yore, and had a very pleasant chat about Sunday schools and kindred subjects, which we found the Col. deeply interested in. His associate, John Audrick, is still on the bright side of life, gay and festive as ever. William Fox is social and of rare qualities and is one of the supports of the institution.
We called at the Evans' House, saw Flanders, the clever and good-natured proprietor. Saw D. Frazer, Life Insurance Agent, a good-hearted and square fellow. Called on John Conant, under the Times Office, and indulged in a repast which we found to our liking.
McGregor erected some fine business houses the past season, and from present appearances, more are in course of construction, and her business men rank among the first in the west.
We can bear the praise given us for "social fellow," our junior is obliged for being reported "on the bright side of life" gay and festive" and Fox is tickled inwardly at being called "one of the supporters of the Times, but that "Sunday School interest" imputed to the writer of this was a pretty heavy load. Doc, don't do it any more; our reputation (according to Tompkins) is bad enough without being contrasted thus publicly with one of the best institutions in the world. We are brother-in-law to the church and uncle-in-law to a Sunday-school of the Baptist persuasion-this is the extent of our religious activity, at present.
Here is a deserved compliment to the Douseman House, only it is not enough. Powell, the clerk is better looking than Williams, the proprietor, and you didn't name him at all. Perhaps you thought that "good wine needs no bush" (see Webster on a bridge.)
The Douseman, at Prairie du Chien, is one of the finest and best conducted hotels in the Northwest, fitted up in fine style, with every convenience or comfort and pleasure. The traveling public may rest assured of being well cared for while this house is under the management of the present landlords, Messrs. Williams and Yox.
