New York.—First because she is a friend of the sailor, but also because she gave nearly half a million dollars toward the Y. M. C. A. home in Brooklyn, 5,000 enlisted men of the navy presented to Miss Helen Gould a silver loving cup Tuesday. The new Y. M. C. A. building and furnishings cost $900,000 and the funds were furnished equally by Miss Gould and Mrs. Russell Sage.
Those present included representatives of all the war vessels in the harbor. The bluejackets cheered Miss Gould with a roar that could be heard blocks away when two apprentice seamen pulled aside the flags and revealed on a base of beauty roses the cup which James McNeill, third class yeoman afterward tendered to the woman philanthropist.
Miss Gould gave expression of her approval in a characteristic little speech.
