In Philadelphia Swindle.

Deadwood.--Letters from officials in Philadelphia ask for information concerning the criminal record here of "Doc" Baggs, well known as a swindler and confidence man here in the early days. According to the letters, Baggs is in trouble in the Quaker city for selling fraudulent mining stocks and an effort is being made to send him to state's prison. Baggs was one of the early days characters here, being a tinhorn gambler and all around confidence schemer. His favorite occupation was three card monte and the old gold brick swindle, which he worked successfully on strangers in the '70s. He left here about that time and was later reported in trouble in Indianapolis, but nothing has been heard from him in many years, and it was supposed that he was dead long ago, as he is now quite an old man.
