Not a Gift-Taker.—On Saturday week, in San Francisco, an importing merchant sold a $2,000 set of diamonds which he had imported, for Carl Schurz's wife to testify his gratitude for assistance rendered by Senator Schurz in the way of advice in getting a bill through the Senate. They were sent to Mrs. Schurz, but returned by Mr. Schurz with a remark that Mrs. Schurz felt that as the wife of a Senator of the United States she could not afford to wear diamonds until her husband could afford to purchase them for her, and was constrained to refuse this beautiful gift.
