What is this article about?
Dr. Stanton Coit, Chairman of the West London Ethical Society, argues that while the law should permit divorce for infidelity, material misrepresentation, or desertion of two years or more, society and the church must show unremitting opposition to any marital separation to avoid anarchy in homes. He criticizes America's easy divorce practices as brutal and selfish, lacking loyalty and self-sacrifice.

Show Unremitting Opposition
to Divorce
By Dr. STANTON COIT. Chairman of the
West London Ethical Society
THE LAW SHOULD PERMIT DIVORCE FOR
INFIDELITY, FOR MISREPRESENTATION
OF FACTS MATERIALLY AFFECTING
MARRIED LIFE. FOR DESERTION OF
TWO YEARS OR MORE. BUT SOCIETY
AND THE CHURCH SHOULD SHOW
UNREMITTING OPPOSITION TO ANY SEPARATION
BETWEEN MAN AND WIFE; OTHERWISE
OUR HOMES WILL SOON BE IN A STATE
OF ANARCHY.
In America it is much easier for members of both sexes
and all ranks of life to break the marriage tie than in
England or other countries, but it seems to me there is the gravest
danger in that very facility.
It seems to me that the modern attitude of society toward the
practice of securing a divorce is incredibly brutal and barbarous. Summed up, it is simply, "We have got into
an awful mess, and let's get out of it as soon as
we can." There is no slightest attempt, no pretense even, toward
loyalty, self sacrifice, the duty of service to a weaker brother or
sister.
There is only the base, selfish desire for individual happiness
at the expense of a race ideal.
