Loco Foco Tactics. The friends and partisans of John C. Calhoun in Congress, and all with whom he could have influence, were most violent and uncompromising in their advocacy of the Sub Treasury bill. "Divorce of Bank and State," seemed to be their watch-word and war-cry, both sleeping and waking: Messrs. Pickens and Rhett, from S. C. two pliant instruments in the hands of the Great Nullifier, are said to have done their utmost to accomplish his purpose, and even Mr. Hunter, of Virginia, who is poisoned with Calhounism, boldly took the Loco Foco ground, in his speech on the floor of Congress, "that there was specie enough in the world for all purposes of currency, and therefore we ought to tolerate nothing else!" This is the sweeping argument of Loco Focism—let us, in the language of the New Yorker, apply it to another case. "There are wagons, canoes and oyster boats enough to convey all the people who ought to travel—why, then, countenance steam-boats and rail roads! To be consistent, let these "Divorce"-loving politicians cry out for a "divorce" of steamboats "and State," and argue in favor of sending troops and Indians up the Mississippi on rafts. Let them make the "divorce" of the U. S. Mails from the railroads the test question of democracy, or is it not perfectly plain that there is an abundance of corduroy and dismal swamp to travel over without them?" Hartford Patriot.
