For the benefit of our friends and readers at home, we announce that Winchester, Tennessee, was occupied by troops composing a part of Major General McCook's 20th Army Corps on the morning of July 3d,—that General Sheridan's division, after a slight skirmish with the enemy's rear guard, passed through Winchester and occupied Cowan, at the base of the mountain, while Brig. Gen. Jeff. C. Davis, with his division occupied the beautiful town from whence we unfurl our banner. Maj. Gen. McCook arrived with his staff, and established his head quarters in town at a later hour the same day, appointing the gallant Gen. Davis commandant of the post.
Winchester occupies a commanding position in the midst of a fertile valley, bounded on the south by a range of spurs of the Cumberland mountains. It is one of the very few towns in the South of good educational advantages. There is a fine female college here, the students of which are now enjoying vacation. There are several other schools of less importance. From our limited knowledge, the society of Winchester is judged to be good, and if the ladies would soften their asperity and dislike for our "yankee" officers, as they call them, they would find them congenial fellows—gentlemen of the nobler sort.
