Associated Press dispatches
of March 30, stated that a radiophone message had been completed with perfect satisfaction from Rugby, England, to a private telephone
subscriber in
Chicago.
This
meant 2900
miles of circuit
through the
air and then connection over
the telephone company wires
to Chicago.
The call was put through by
Arthur A. Oswald of the Bell
Telephone Laboratories, who
designed and built the Rugby
radio-telephone station.
The connection on this side of
the water was made just as
any long-distance circuit would
be connected, the operators
having no idea that they were
making telephone history. Officials of the American Telephone and Telegraph company
state, however, that their wires
are not equipped at present to
put through such calls, even
in cases of great emergency,
unless conditions are just right.
It has again remained for the
American telephone system to
demonstrate its supremacy and
initiative in extending its field
of public service, in advance
of the demands or even the
wildest dreams of its patrons.
While the present call was
largely experimental, it shows
the ends to which the company intends to go in rendering
not only a national, but an international service.
