Full Text

The alarm created among the Democratic leaders at Washington, by the loud and emphatic chorus of indignant condemnation of their revolutionary movement that has come from all parts of the country, is strikingly shown by the charge they have made in their proposed plan of investigation. At first, in the insolence of their power, they resolved to hold a secret session, and insultingly refused Secretary Sherman's demand to be represented by counsel before the commission. They have been compelled, by public opinion to yield in both of these matters, and there is no doubt at all that they are heartily sick of the whole business, and would be glad of any decent excuse for throwing it up.
