COAL-OIL HORROR IN NEWPORT
Fannie Jones, Daughter of the School Superintendent, Fatally Burned.

A horrible accident occurred about midnight at the residence of Mr. Jones, Superintendent of the Public Schools. The victim is Miss Fannie Jones. Her little brother had been to a party, and arrived at the door of his home shortly before 12 o'clock. Miss Jones got up to let him in. She was dressed in her night-dress. They went to the dining-room and ate some lunch, after which they proceeded up stairs. The boy was in advance, and when he arrived at the top he heard his sister scream, which was followed by a loud crash.

He turned around and saw her enveloped in a sheet of flames. Running to his room and returning with a blanket was the work of a minute. He ran after his sister, who was rushing frantically around the house, trailing after her a stream of fire which dripped from her clothes. A young man named George Bowers, who was passing the house, heard the agonizing screams and broke in the door. He took off his coat and wrapped it around the burning girl. The flames, however, had already consumed her garments. She was carried insensible to her bed and a physician summoned.

The skin of her hands with the nails entire were found on the floor, and her whole body, except a small portion which was covered by her corset, was entirely roasted.

The poor girl had only graduated yesterday with high honors from Woodward High School, and was only eighteen years old. There is hardly any hope for her recovery.

It is supposed that she either dropped the coal-oil lamp she was carrying, thus setting the fluid on fire, or that it exploded in her hand, causing the terrible accident.
