Full Text

Rush for District Offices.

Much of the time of Commissioner Webb is employed in reading heartrending applications for office and in trying to explain to innumerable applicants the utter futility of the requests. There are, perhaps, no more than a half dozen vacancies a year in the District service, while there are enough applicants to fill all the postoffices in the country. Commissioner Webb gives patient and sympathetic attention to all such cases, but said to-day that the feeling of a multitude with a few loaves and fishes had only been accomplished once in history, and that if he were expected to rival that achievement, somebody will be disappointed.
