Ward's President Agrees to Sign After Receiving Roosevelt Order

CHICAGO—Sewell Avery, Montgomery Ward president, said Saturday afternoon that an order from President Roosevelt to sign a contract with employes in the form directed by the war labor board would be "promptly obeyed."

WASHINGTON—President Roosevelt Saturday directed Montgomery Ward & Co., Chicago, "without further delay" to sign a contract with its employes in the form directed by the War Labor Board.

The president acted soon after conferring with WLB Chairman William H. Davis. The wording of the president's order was sent at once by telegram to Sewell Avery, Montgomery Ward president by White House Secretary Stephen T. Early.

"Dear Sir: As commander-in-chief in time of war I hereby direct Montgomery Ward & Co. to comply, without further delay, with the National War Labor Board's directive order of Dec. 8, 1942," the president ordered.
