The Designs of Russia.
A vast amount of speculation as to
the real objects Russia had in view, the
advancement of which was effected by
a declaration of war with Turkey, it
being generally conceded that the ostensible one—that of protecting Christians—is merely a pretext; but a Herald correspondent has at length succeeded in pumping the whole secret out of a
Russian diplomat, probably without that gentleman being aware of the fact.
According to these disclosures, Russia,
in making war upon Turkey, has a two-fold object: first, by her advance into
Asia to gain the right of way and passage to China; and second, by her operations in Europe, to obtain the freedom of the different tributary States,
namely, Bulgaria, Herzegovina, Roumania, Servia and Bosnia, and she would
guarantee these provinces their independence, no matter against what Power. In other words, she would form a
defensive and offensive alliance with
those liberated territories. The correspondent was likewise informed that
long before an army could possibly be
brought in front of the walls of Constantinople peace would be made. The
terms of peace would perhaps include
the surrender on the part of Turkey of
a portion of her fleet and the consummation of a treaty placing Constantinople under the joint control of all foreign powers. Russia has no intention
of advancing into India, for her ambition is to become master and possessor
of the port of the Celestial Empire.
Toward this end her inroads into Asia
are directed.
In the dim, uncertain twilight of the
soft May evening, a distracted figure
was seen hastily flitting down the street of an Ohio town in the direction of the
railroad station. It slipped a lank and
hungry gripsack on the bracket of the
window and demanded in husky tones:
"Take me where to?" calmly asked the
uniformed monopolist behind the window. "Nowhere! Anywhere!" was the
frenzied response. "Anywhere! clear
through! Clean across. To Bulgaria,
to Troosky, or the Danube of Dign-
doffer or any other place. Anywhere
out of this ungrateful country that coldly turns its back upon its deserving
children. Anywhere out of America."
and he bowed his head and wept. He
