The New City Basin.

THE WORK COMMENCED THIS MORNING—THE LOCATION—ITS EXTENT, &C.

Contrary to the information given to a COMMERCIAL reporter by the chairman of the Water Committee, and also by the Water Registrar, and published in Saturday's paper, work commenced this morning on the new basin. A reporter called at the office of the Chief Engineer of the Water Works this morning and found Captain Gallagher surrounded by a dense crowd of persons, black and white, applying for work. The Captain was kept busy taking down their names and residences promising to send for them when wanted.

About half past 8 o'clock a couple of dozen or so of men started out Tenth Street to the place of operations, where they were to be employed in clearing off the grounds preparatory to active operations. The WORKMEN WILL BE EMPLOYED, day by day, as the work progresses, and as fast as the city can furnish tools, carts, and other needed implements for carrying on the work. By the end of the present week, should the weather prove favorable, there may be from 75 to one hundred hands employed, and others will be taken as soon as possible until the number may reach 250, or probably in excess of that. The first work will be the blasting and removing of a number of boulders, which are scattered over a part of the surface, and the building of a stone wall along a part of Franklin street to turn the current of water from Rodney's Spring, around down Tenth street.

THE MEN ARE TO BE DIVIDED into gangs or companies, each with a leader or boss, but how many will be in a gang we have not been informed. Those successful in procuring work, this morning, were profuse in their thanks, and started off with light hearts to engage in their allotted labor.

The contemplated new city basin is located between Tenth and Twelfth streets, running East and West; and between Jackson and Franklin Sts., running North and South, including in its outlines six squares, being two squares in length from South to North, and three squares in width from East to West, or in feet it is 960 in length from Jackson to Franklin street, and 680 feet in width from Tenth to Twelfth.
